It is safe to say that the beauty world is obsessed with including activated charcoal as a main ingredient in products because it visibly improves the texture of your complexion. It works like a magnet that sucks all of the gunk out of your skin. I have combination, acne-prone skin so I am constantly looking for ways to combat breakouts and keep oil at bay. This ingredient works so well to help keep my skin fresh and at its best.
The Benefits of Charcoal
Activated charcoal is a carbon that has been treated specifically for the reason of increasing its absorbency. As a result, products made with charcoal are effective in detoxing the body and skin by drawing out oil, sebum and dirt. It can draw out 100 to 200 times its weight in impurities. Here are my favourite charcoal products that I use in my weekly beauty routine.
Herbivore Bamboo Charcoal Cleansing Bar Soap ($12)
The Herbivore Bamboo Charcoal bar soap is made out off food-grade ingredients in the United States. It is cruelty-free and gentle enough to use every day. I have started using this product as both my face and body wash. It is non-toxic, which aligns with my currently goal of cleaning up my skincare routine. Truthfully, at first it felt wrong to use a bar of soap on my face, but I have quickly grown to love it. The product does bubble up a bit, but not as much as your typical soap bar. It is all natural and made without added detergent, the ingredient that is usually responsible for the lather in soap. I also love how much money I am saving because this $12 product has replaced both my face and body wash (both of which were well over that price tag).
GlamGlow Supermud Clearing Treatment Mini ($24)
I resisted the urge to buy this product for a long time due to the insane price tag of the full-sized version ($79). I finally decided to try to mini version of this treatment to see if it actually agreed with my skin before fully committing. This has quickly become my favourite face mask. When you apply it, it has an incredible cooling sensation and smells a little bit like mint. The mask dries quickly and can be used all over the face or just as a spot treatment. The most unique part about it is that you can tell exactly where it absorbed dirt and oil out of your pores because it leaves little, dark dots behind on the mask. When you wash it off, your skin is left feeling refreshed and you can visibly see the difference. Unlike other charcoal masks that I have tried, this does not dry out my skin.
Takesumi Detox Bamboo Charcoal Deodorant ($21)
This summer, I went through the process of detoxing my armpits. If you can imagine, it was as lovely as it sounds. You can read about the full sweaty and smelly transition here. Months after making the switch to natural deodorant, my body has completed adjusted and I am so happy that I made this switch. This toxic-free product has cleansed my body of bacteria build-up, thanks to the activated charcoal it is made out of. I now can go a day without deodorant without evening getting stinky. This has seriously made a huge difference for my body, and I feel so good knowing that I am not longer trapping toxins in my body by using antiperspirant.
