I have tried some weird acne treatments in the past, but this one is certainly one of the most unique. Neutrogena came out with a Light Therapy Acne Mask that sort of resembles a welding mask, or maybe it just makes me look like Jason Voorhees. Either way, it certainly is different.
About the Product
The Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Mask ($45) combines blue and red light to kill acne-causing bacteria. It is free of chemicals and doesn’t use UV light so it is safe for your skin. The plastic shell has little dots of light inside that turn on when you hold down the power button on the remote activator. The inside features built-in sunglasses to protect your eyes. You simply slide the legs of the glasses over your ears and wear it for 10 minutes at a time until the light turns off automatically.
After 30 uses, you have to repurchase a new Light Therapy Acne Activator ($20) to continue using the mask. While this may seem expensive at first, I think it is reasonable given that most sheet masks are $10 and you only get a one time use out of them. The one thing that I will caution is to make sure that you don’t accidentally double-click the power button in an attempt to turn off the activator. If you do that, the number on the screen will drop down by one and you will lose one day of use.
Does it Work?
I have been testing this mask for over a month now to see if it really makes a difference in my skin. Overall, yes it actually works to help get rid of breakouts faster. I was pleasantly surprised about this and doubted it a bit because the product looks like such a gimmick. As with most acne treatments, this works best on whiteheads. I did not notice any drastic improvement when it comes to my hormonal acne spots.
I think that the biggest challenge of using this product is actually wearing it on a daily basis. It doesn’t seem like a long time to leave something on for 10 minutes, but I constantly find myself forgetting to do it. If you don’t use it consistently, you won’t see results.
After you use the mask, it makes your skin feel a little bit tight, but it isn’t overly drying. The mask does not emit any heat on the skin. When you wear it, it alters your vision a little bit making colours appear differently. I really love that it is mess-free, unlike a lot of my favourite masks which leave my bathroom sink looking disgusting.
If you have seen the ads for this product and been curious about it, I would say go ahead and test it out. It is nice to use a treatment that won’t stain all of my sheets, make a mess of my bathroom or cause insane dry patches on my face. The biggest thing with this mask is just to be consistent using it. I think that using it regularly also has helped to prevent some of my breakouts before they happen. It is a gentle and effective treatment of surface-level acne.
