Tans will come, and tans will go – but your foundation shade probably won’t match your body all summer.
We all know how horrible it is when your makeup doesn’t quite match the rest of your body. For years, when my foundation didn’t match I would just try to apply my foundation as far down onto my neck as possible. I had to convince myself that no one would notice, but it is always obvious.
Purchasing foundation colour adjusting drops is the perfect way to ensure that your favourite foundation will always match – even after a day at the beach. This saves you from purchasing several of the same product in different colours and gives you control to make the slightest changes to the colour. For me personally, I will never need to buy the darker toned drops because when I get a tan, I finally am able to match my foundation. I use lightening drops year round to turn porcelain foundations into the paper white shade that matches my actual skin tone. Tragic, I know.
Here are some of my favourite products that allow you to customize the shade of your foundation. All of them come in dropper applicators, which make them easy to control. Purchase a few shades lighter or darker than your foundation shade to allow some flexibility when it comes to mixing. I would suggest always starting with fewer drops and adding more if needed. As always, don’t try to match your foundation shade to your hand, match it to your chest and neck.
NYX Cosmetics Total Control Drop Foundation ($16)
While this is technically a foundation, it works really well to adjust the colour of other products. It comes in 24 shades, the lightest of which is actually too pale for my natural skin tone – something that has never happened to me before. Due to the fact that it is a foundation, the more drops you add, the more coverage it will help to provide. This product comes in a variety of undertones as well.
The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops Liquid Foundation ($22)
This product comes in two shades: lightening and darkening. The lightening drops are made up of white and pink pigments, which is helpful if you have cool-toned skin and your foundation appears too orange on the skin. The darkening drops consist of black and red pigements, so it compliments the natural depth of darker complexions. Unlike some of the other products on this list, these drops will not change the coverage of the product that you are using. One drop of the product makes your foundation about a half shade lighter or darker, which gives you a lot of control.
Cover FX Custom Cover Drops ($56)
Although this is the most expensive product on the list, it also offers the most versatility. Marketed as a pure pigment, these drops can be mixed to alter the shade of foundation. You can also mix it with moisturizer, sunscreen or use it alone to give you your desired colour and coverage.
