Bite Beauty – Lip Lab

I have always loved custom-made things. As a child, I was obsessed with wearing necklaces with my name on it. As I got older, I developed an appreciation for dresses tailored to fit me perfectly. This week I went to the Bite Beauty lip lab and was able to customize the lipstick of my dreams.

Bite is a Canadian-based company that creates mostly lip products out of organic ingredients.

Bite Beauty has four lip labs located in Toronto, New York and two in San Francisco. You can do a walk-in, but it is recommended that you make an appointment. The total experience takes about 30 minutes.

When your appointment starts, you begin with a cherry lip scrub to remove all of the dead skin cells and create a smooth canvas for applying colour. There are four finishes to choose from, ranging from glossy and sheer to matte and highly pigmented.

Next, I attempted to describe my dream colour – a task that was much more difficult than I had initially though.

“A brownish, reddish, nude that makes my teeth look white and doesn’t look coral,” required nine attempts to finally get the right one for my skin tone. Bradlee – the employee creating my custom shade – was more than patient and helpful.

The finale stage of customization is selecting a scent. I went with coconut and vanilla mixed together (and it is heavenly).

Once a formula for the shade is created, the ingredients are melted together and poured into a mold that is put over ice until it cools down. A bullet is then carefully placed over the base of the lipstick and viola! A custom lipstick.
